Melissa is a footwear brand that believes fashion should include environmental and people protection in production. Here is how our company proceeds to respect these values.
Also every year, Melissa boycotts and denounces Black Friday , a symbol of overconsumption which therefore does not escape the fashion sector, the second most polluting industry in the world according to a McKinsey report. For this, the Brazilian brand participates in the Green Friday Movement , which takes place every year a few days after Black Friday. Concretely, the stores that join this cause take part in the awareness-raising operation by highlighting alternatives to compulsive consumption. Green Friday tends to allow consumers to rethink their purchasing power which, beyond designating the ability to consume, reminds us that it is the citizens who hold the power over consumption. Moreover, on the occasion of Black Friday, Melissa does not sell any of her products and donates 10% of her sales made that day to associations that respect the same values.
Melissa is also proud to have obtained Vegan certification for its products in 2019 , a label issued by The Vegan Society , which is a British institution committed to a cruelty-free world since 1944.
Because Melissa's commitment is not limited to products but also includes all services related to the brand's shoes, the packaging of the shoes is made of FSC - the Forest Stewardship Council certified paper.
Melissa, part of the Grendene group, works towards compliance with the 17 "Sustainable Development Goals" set by the UN as part of the 2030 Agenda and adopted in 2015. While some actions are being deployed, 8 of the 17 goals established are already in place :
- Good health and well-being
- Access to quality education , in particular through Grendene University, which already trains more than 7,000 people
- Gender equality
- Access to safe water and sanitation
- Reliable and sustainable energy at an affordable cost
- Access to decent jobs, the brand's ethical charter ensuring the valuation and respect of its employees
- Building resilient infrastructure and encouraging innovation
- Responsible consumption and production
In this, Melissa has significantly reduced her water consumption by 35% in 5 years. In the factories located in Brazil, solar panels have been installed to carry out the production which, moreover, also works with a closed water circuit system. With regard to Melissa products, and because we know that waste in fashion considerably pollutes the planet, customers can send their shoes back to the brand . In the factories, the recyclable material of the shoe will be melted down so that it can be used to create new pairs. If collection points already exist in other countries, you will soon be able to drop off your shoes at French collection points!
In any case, our patented Melflex® material that you find in each model remains 100% recyclable .
More than a production, Melissa sees eco-responsible fashion as a philosophy. Our brand continues to work on areas for improvement and demonstrates its ability to meet new challenges. For example, Melissa's collaboration with Rombaut has given rise to 50% recycled products , thus exceeding the 30% minimum for the other models. You can find the Melting Bocaccio Melissa + Rombaut sneakers and the Possession Melissa + Rombaut sandals at the corner that we have at the Galeries Lafayette Champs-Élysées !
